What is Tibial Hemimelia?
Tibial Hemimelia is a rare congenital condition where a part or the entire tibia (shinbone) is missing. This leads to deformities in the leg, affecting the knee, ankle, and foot. The condition can vary from mild to severe, with some cases involving only a partial absence of the tibia.
What causes Tibial Hemimelia?
The exact cause of Tibial Hemimelia is not well understood. However, it is believed to result from genetic mutations or disruptions during fetal development. In some cases, it may be associated with other congenital syndromes.
How is Tibial Hemimelia treated?
- Orthopedic surgery to reconstruct or stabilize the limb
- Limb lengthening procedures
- Amputation in severe cases, followed by prosthetic fitting
- Physical therapy to improve mobility and strength
